Ayat al-Kursi (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:255):

Translation:

Allah – there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence.
Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep.
To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth.
Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission?
He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them,
and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills.
His Kursi (throne/authority) extends over the heavens and the earth,
and their preservation tires Him not.
And He is the Most High, the Most Great.

Explanation:

  1. Tawheed (Oneness of Allah):
This verse begins by affirming that Allah alone is worthy of worship, and no one shares His divinity.
  2. Perfect Attributes:
He is Al-Hayy (Ever-Living) and Al-Qayyum (Sustainer). He needs nothing, yet everything needs Him.
  3. No Fatigue or Sleep:
Allah is not like His creation. He never becomes tired, drowsy, or sleeps — highlighting His perfection and constant care.
  4. Absolute Ownership:
Everything in the heavens and the earth belongs to Him. We own nothing except what He grants us.
  5. No Intercession Without His Permission:
Even intercession (shafa’ah) by angels or prophets can only occur with His permission.
  6. Complete Knowledge:
Allah knows the past, present, and future. His knowledge is limitless and unmatched.
  7. Kursi (Authority/Throne):
His throne/authority extends over all creation, showing His greatness and power.
  8. No Fatigue in Preservation:
Managing the universe doesn’t tire Him. He is fully in control, without effort.
  9. Exalted and Majestic:
The verse ends by reminding us that Allah is the Most High and Most Great.

Why It’s the Best:

  • Described by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as the greatest ayah in the Qur’an.
  • Offers powerful protection — reciting it after every prayer and before sleep brings blessings and safety.
  • Reminds us of Allah’s unmatched power, knowledge, and mercy.
