– Surah Maryam 19:56-57
Prophet Idris (AS), known as Enoch in biblical texts, was a great-grandson of Prophet Adam (AS) and the great-grandfather of Prophet Nuh (AS). He was born in Babylon and followed the path of monotheism taught by Adam and Sheeth (AS). Allah ﷻ describes Idris as truthful, patient, and righteous.
He was not just a Prophet but also a reformer, teacher, scientist, and warrior.
Allah ﷻ says in the Quran:
“And mention in the Book (the Qur’an) Idris. Indeed, he was a man of truth and a prophet. And We raised him to a high station.”
(Surah Maryam 19:56–57)
“And [mention] Ishmael, Idris and Dhul-Kifl; all were among the patient. And We admitted them into Our mercy. Indeed, they were of the righteous.”
(Surah Al-Anbiya 21:85–86)
- Idris (AS), known as Enoch in Biblical traditions, was born in Babylon, in the fifth generation after Prophet Adam (AS).
- He was the great-grandfather of Prophet Nuh (AS), and his son was Methuselah, who lived for nearly 969 years.
- Idris (AS) was a direct descendant of Prophet Adam (AS) through his son Seth (Sheeth).
- Prophet Idris (AS) followed the path of Adam and Sheeth, calling people to Tawheed (Monotheism) and righteousness.
- Allah taught him writing, making him the first to use the pen and record knowledge.
- He was gifted with knowledge in science, astronomy, mathematics, and was an innovator in tools and tailoring.
- Idris (AS) was also the first Prophet to establish Jihad—a struggle against the corruption of the people of Cain.
- Described as well-built, broad-chested, with more hair on his head than his body.
- He spoke in a soft voice and walked with his feet closely placed, indicating dignity and humility.
- He was known for teaching the greatness of Allah ﷻ and is believed to have spoken every language of the earth.
- Idris (AS) saw widespread evil and corruption, especially among Cain’s descendants.
- He organized a disciplined army, including horsemen and foot soldiers, to fight this evil.
- By the will of Allah, he was victorious, restoring justice and faith among his people.
One of the most remarkable events in the life of Idris (AS) is his ascension:
- Allah revealed to Idris that he would be rewarded for not only his deeds but also the good deeds of all people of his time.
- Wanting to increase his rewards, he asked his angel companion to speak with the Angel of Death about extending his life.
- The angel took Idris (AS) on his back to the fourth heaven, where they encountered the Angel of Death.
- The Angel of Death, surprised, revealed: “Allah has commanded me to take the soul of Idris in the fourth heaven. I wondered how that would happen—now I see how.”
Thus, Idris (AS) passed away in the fourth heaven, making him the only Prophet whose soul was taken there.
- After Idris (AS) passed, people remained upon Tawheed for around 1000 years.
- Over time, Shaitan (Iblis) began misleading people gradually through:
- Glorifying righteous individuals.
- Drawing and carving their images.
- Encouraging reverence, then bowing.
- Eventually, idol worship began.
- This was the beginning of shirk (polytheism), which ultimately led to the rise of Prophet Nuh (AS).
Some of his timeless wisdom includes:
- “Happy is he who looks at his own deeds and appoints them as pleaders to his Lord.”
- “None can show better gratitude for Allah’s favors than he who shares them with others.”
- “Do not envy people for what they have, as they will only enjoy it for a short while.”
- “He who indulges in excess will not benefit from it.”
- “The real joy of life is to have wisdom.”
- Seek knowledge and use it wisely.
- Stand against corruption and injustice.
- Value your deeds and strive for sincerity.
- Beware of gradual misguidance by Shaitan.
- Remember that honoring the righteous should never lead to shirk.
