Supplications for Travel

🚙 1. Supplication When Starting a Journey

Arabic:
اَللهُ أَكْبَرُ، اَللهُ أَكْبَرُ، اَللهُ أَكْبَرُ، سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هٰذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ، وَإِنَّا إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُونَ، اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنَّا نَسْأَلُكَ فِيْ سَفَرِنَا هٰذَا الْبِرَّ وَالتَّقْوَىٰ، وَمِنَ الْعَمَلِ مَا تَرْضَىٰ، اَللّٰهُمَّ هَوِّنْ عَلَيْنَا سَفَرَنَا هٰذَا وَاطْوِ عَنَّا بُعْدَهُ، اَللّٰهُمَّ أَنْتَ الصَّاحِبُ فِي السَّفَرِ، وَالْخَلِيْفَةُ فِي الْأَهْلِ، اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّيْ أَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنْ وَعْثَاءِ السَّفَرِ، وَكَآبَةِ الْمَنْظَرِ، وَسُوْءِ الْمُنْقَلَبِ فِيْ الْمَالِ وَالْأَهْلِ

Transliteration:
Allāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar, subḥāna-lladhī sakkhara lanā hādhā wa mā kunnā lahū muqrinīn, wa innā ilā rabbinā lamunqalibūn. Allāhumma innā nas’aluka fī safarinā hādhā-l-birra wa-t-taqwā, wa mina-l-ʿamali mā tarḍā. Allāhumma hawwin ʿalaynā safaranā hādhā wa-ṭwiʿ ʿannā buʿdah. Allāhumma anta-ṣ-ṣāḥibu fi-s-safar, wa-l-khalīfatu fi-l-ahl. Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika min waʿthāi-s-safar, wa kaābati-l-manẓar, wa sū’i-l-munqalabi fi-l-māli wa-l-ahl.

Meaning:

Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. How perfect is the One Who has given us control over this; we could not have done it by ourselves. Truly, to our Lord we are returning. O Allah, we ask You for righteousness and piety and good deeds that You are pleased with during our journey. O Allah, make this journey easy for us and shorten its distance. O Allah, You are the Companion on the journey and the Successor over our family. O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the hardships of travel, sorrowful sights, and an ill fate regarding wealth and family.

🤲 2. Supplication When Realizing One’s Shortcomings

Arabic:
سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِي، فَاغْفِرْ لِي، فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ

Transliteration:
Subḥānaka innī ẓalamtu nafsī, faghfir lī, fa-innahu lā yaghfiru-dh-dhunūba illā Anta.

Meaning:

You are free from imperfection. I have wronged myself, so forgive me, because none forgives sins except You.

(Abū Dāwūd 2602)


🏡 3. Upon Returning from a Journey

Arabic:
آئِبُوْنَ، تَائِبُوْنَ، عَابِدُوْنَ، لِرَبِّنَا حَامِدُوْنَ

Transliteration:
Ā’ibūna tā’ibūna ʿābidūna, li rabbinā ḥāmidūn.

Meaning:

Returning, repenting, worshipping, and praising our Lord.

(Muslim 1342)


🛑 4. When Dismounting at a Place

Arabic:
أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ

Transliteration:
Aʿūdhu bi kalimāti-llāhi-t-tāmmāti min sharri mā khalaq.

Meaning:

I seek protection in Allah’s perfect words from the evil of what He has created.

(Muslim 2708)


🏡 5. When Entering Upon One’s Family

Arabic:
تَوْبًا تَوْبًا، لِرَبِّنَا أَوْبًا، لَا يُغَادِرُ عَلَيْنَا حَوْبًا

Transliteration:
Tawban tawban, li-Rabbinā awban, lā yugādiru ḥawban.

Meaning:

Turning, turning (in repentance), to our Lord returning, without leaving behind any sin.

(Aḥmad 300)


🤲 6. Traveler’s Supplication for the Resident

Arabic:
أَسْتَوْدِعُكُمُ اللهَ الَّذِيْ لَا تَضِيْعُ وَدَائِعُهُ

Transliteration:
Astawdiʿukumu-llāha-lladhī lā taḍīʿu wadā’iʿuh.

Meaning:

I entrust you to Allah, in whose trust nothing is lost.

(Ibn Mājah 2825)


🤲 7. Resident’s Supplication for the Traveler

#1

Arabic:
أَسْتَوْدِعُ اللهَ دِيْنَكَ، وَأَمَانَتَكَ، وَخَوَاتِيْمَ عَمَلِكَ

Transliteration:
Astawdiʿu-llāha dīnaka wa amānataka wa khawātīma ʿamalik.

Meaning:

I entrust your religion, trust, and final deeds to Allah.

(Tirmidhī 3443)

Arabic:
زَوَّدَكَ اللَّهُ التَّقْوَى، وَغَفَرَ ذَنْبَكَ، وَيَسَّرَ لَكَ الْخَيْرَ حَيْثُمَا كُنْتَ

Transliteration:
Zawwadaka-llāhu-t-taqwā, wa ghafara dhambak, wa yassara laka-l-khayra ḥaythuma kunt.

Meaning:

May Allah grant you Taqwa as provision, forgive your sin, and make goodness easy for you wherever you are.

(Tirmidhī 3444)

Arabic:
اللَّهُمَّ اطْوِ لَهُ الْأَرْضَ وَهَوِّنْ عَلَيْهِ السَّفَرَ

Transliteration:
Allāhumma-ṭwi lahu-l-arḍa wa hawwin ʿalayhi-s-safar.

Meaning:

O Allah, shorten the distance for him and make the journey easy for him.

(Tirmidhī 3445)


🛍️ 8. Supplication When Entering a Market

Arabic:
لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيْكَ لَهُ…

Transliteration:
Lā ilāha illā-llāhu waḥdahū lā sharīka lah, lahu-l-mulku wa lahu-l-ḥamd, yuḥyī wa yumīt, wa Huwa Ḥayyun lā yamūt, bi yadihi-l-khayr, wa Huwa ʿalā kulli shay’in Qadīr.

Meaning:

There is no deity but Allah alone, without partner. His is the dominion and to Him belongs all praise. He gives life and death. He is Living and does not die. In His Hand is good, and He has power over all things.

(Tirmidhī 3429)


🏙️ 9. Supplication When Entering a Town or City

Arabic:
اَللّٰهُمَّ رَبَّ السَّمٰوَاتِ السَّبْعِ وَمَا أَظْلَلْنَ…

Transliteration:
Allāhumma Rabba-s-samāwāti-s-sabʿi wa mā aẓlaln…

Meaning:

O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and what they shade, Lord of the seven earths and what they carry, Lord of the devils and those whom they mislead, Lord of the winds and what they scatter, I ask You for the goodness of this town and its people, and the good that is in it. I seek Your protection from its evil and the evil of its people and what is in it.

(Nasā’ī 5/256, Ibn al-Sunnī 524)


🌃 10. Supplication When Night Falls on a Journey

Arabic:
يَا أَرْضُ، رَبِّي وَرَبُّكِ اللَّهُ…

Transliteration:
Yā arḍu, Rabbī wa Rabbuki-llāh…

Meaning:

O Earth, your Lord and my Lord is Allah. I seek refuge in Allah from your evil, the evil in you, and the evil that crawls over you. I seek refuge from lions, black beasts, snakes, scorpions, and the evil of the inhabitants of the land and their offspring.

(Abū Dāwūd 2603)


🐎 11. Supplication When Unable to Remain Steady on a Mount

Arabic:
اللَّهُمَّ ثَبِّتْهُ وَاجْعَلْهُ هَادِيًا مَهْدِيًّا

Transliteration:
Allāhumma thabbit’hu wa jaʿalhu hādiyam mahdiyyā.

Meaning:

O Allah, make him steady and a rightly guided guide.

(Bukhārī 3036)


🌅 12. Supplication When Dawn Breaks While Travelling

Arabic:
سَمَّعَ سَامِعٌ بِحَمْدِ اللَّهِ وَحُسْنِ بَلَائِهِ عَلَيْنَا…

Transliteration:
Sammaʿa sāmiʿun bi-ḥamdi-llāhi wa ḥusni balā’ihi ʿalaynā…

Meaning:

A hearer heard our praise of Allah for His good trials upon us. Our Lord, accompany us, bestow favor upon us, and I seek refuge in Allah from the Fire.

(Muslim 7075)
